‘The Bodyguard’ Remake Coming From Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Director

The upcoming remake of The Bodyguard has found its director.

Grammy-nominated and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Sam Wrench, best known for directing the 2023 concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, has been tapped to helm Warner Bros.’ reimagining of the iconic 1992 romantic thriller, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The original film famously starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.

Casting for the remake has yet to be announced. Jonathan Abrams, who wrote last year’s Clint Eastwood-directed Juror #2, is penning the script. A previous version of the screenplay was written by director and playwright Matthew López, with the project in various stages of development since 2011, THR reports.

Wrench has found past success directing projects featuring major pop stars. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour became the highest-grossing concert film of all time, earning $179.2 million during its nine-week theatrical run after debuting in October 2023. The film has since surpassed $250 million in global ticket sales, according to distributor AMC Theatres. It was shot during the first three nights of Swift’s Eras Tour at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Wrench’s additional credits include A Nonsense Christmas, starring Sabrina Carpenter, which premiered during the 2023 holiday season on Netflix. He has also directed projects for artists such as BTS, Lizzo, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd and Mary J. Blige. In late 2022, Wrench received a Grammy nomination for best music film for Billie Eilish Live at the O2.

The original Bodyguard, directed by Mick Jackson, was a global box office hit, grossing $411 million at the worldwide box office. Its accompanying soundtrack is widely regarded as one of the best-selling and most iconic film soundtracks of all time, with over 12.1 million copies sold. It spawned several Billboard Hot 100 hits, including top five songs: “I’m Every Woman,” “I Have Nothing” and the smash No. 1 hit “I Will Always Love You.”
